Within Foods with Health Claims, there are 3 types of products; Foods with Function Claims, Foods with Nutrient Function Claims, and Foods for Specified Health Use.
On April 1, 2001, the Food with Health Claims System was established to allow consumers to select foods according to eating habits. The system is under the jurisdiction of the Consumer Affairs Agency.
Under the business operators’ own responsibility, Foods with Function Claims can be labeled with function claims based on scientific evidence. This new system was established in April 2015.
Foods with Nutrient Function Claims are foods which are used to supply nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and labeled with the nutrient function claims.
Foods for Specified Health Uses are foods carrying the label indicating the specific health use to be marketed. To market the product as a FOSHU, each product must be examined for its effectiveness and safety and approved for the label by the government.
The market size of the health food is considered to be about 720 billion yen, and it is slightly increasing by about 1-3% annually. The market size for the Food with Health Function Claims is estimated about 500 billion yen. Food for Specified Health Uses accounts for 74%.
In health food, non-store retailing such as mail-order selling or door-to-door selling accounts for about 74%. Door-to-door selling is gradually decreasing, whereas mail-order selling and drug route selling are slightly increasing year by year.
Middle-aged and senior adults who are the main target of the health food market will be increased steadily hereafter as the whole market due to further promotion of aging.
